Sheila Chepkirui once again proved the strongest on the streets of New York, controlling the key moments of the women’s elite race. In this article, you’ll find a breakdown of the decisive kilometers, the full TOP 10 results, and a concise summary of how the podium unfolded in this year’s marathon.
The women’s elite field started around thirty minutes before the men. The opening kilometers were run at a controlled pace, allowing a compact group to form. Shortly after the 5 km mark, the tempo was slightly increased by the African athletes and the American runners, who traditionally aim to show strong performances at the New York City Marathon. The leaders passed 10 km in 35:45.
Clearer splits in the front group appeared around the 20 km mark. The pace picked up and the lead pack was reduced to twelve athletes. Among them were the Kenyan favorites and several Americans with personal bests suggesting they could fight for top positions. The halfway point was reached in 1:13:53, confirming that the race was demanding but still tactically open.
At 30 km, eight women remained in contention, including Sheila Chepkirui, Hellen Obiri, Viola Cheptoo and Americans Jessica McClain, Weini Kelati and Carrie Ellwood. This section of the race was covered in 1:44:04. A few kilometers later, Ellwood dropped from the lead group, and Kelati struggled with stomach issues. McClain stayed with the leaders, running efficiently and conserving energy for the final part of the course.
Around the 36 km mark, the Kenyan athletes, including Chepkirui and Obiri, increased the pace and opened a small gap on the rest of the field. The closing kilometers through Central Park, with their turns and rolling profile, once again demanded not only strength but also smart positioning and optimal race lines. This is where the decisive differences in the women’s race began to emerge.
With roughly one mile to go, Jessica McClain started to reduce the gap to the leaders, using a more direct racing line on the bends. Over the final 500 meters, the battle for the podium places was decided. Sheila Chepkirui held her advantage and crossed the finish line first in 2:24:36. McClain finished second with a personal best of 2:24:42, ahead of Hellen Obiri, who recorded 2:24:43. Just off the podium came the experienced Edna Kiplagat, once again showing her ability to compete at the highest level.
