New York City Marathon 2026: Second Chance Drawing for New York Road Runners Members

Races organized by the New York Road Runners (NYRR) – including the prestigious TCS New York City Marathon, United Airlines NYC Half, and RBC Brooklyn Half – attract global interest, meaning race spots are limited. For individuals who do not qualify for guaranteed entry, the standard route is through the general, non-guaranteed entry drawing. However, NYRR offers its members a unique benefit: the Member-Only Second-Chance Drawing.

Rules for the Second-Chance Drawing for NYRR Members

Every current NYRR member who applies for the general, non-guaranteed drawing for one of the mentioned races (Marathon, NYC Half Marathon, Brooklyn Half Marathon) is automatically included in the pool for the Member-Only Second-Chance Drawing.

Membership and Qualification Requirements

To be eligible for the Second-Chance Drawing, your New York Road Runners membership status must meet two key conditions:

  • Membership must be active the day before applications open for the general drawing.
  • Membership must remain active on the day of the actual drawing for the given event.

Anyone who meets these requirements and applies for the general drawing is automatically included in the Member-Only Second-Chance Drawing pool – no additional registration is required.

Selection Process and Fee Collection

The Second-Chance Drawing takes place on the same day as the General Entry Drawing.

  1. First, the General Entry Drawing takes place.
  2. All eligible NYRR members who were not selected in the General Drawing proceed to the Second-Chance Drawing.
  3. Upon successful selection in the Second-Chance Drawing, the full race registration fee will be charged immediately to the linked payment card.

Notification of being drawn in the Second-Chance Drawing is sent electronically before the end of the day following the completion of both drawings.

Overview of Races Included in the Second-Chance Drawing

Race Name Distance
TCS New York City Marathon Marathon (42.195 km)
United Airlines NYC Half Half Marathon (21.0975 km)
RBC Brooklyn Half Half Marathon (21.0975 km)

Summary of Membership Benefits

The Second-Chance Drawing is a concrete and measurable benefit of NYRR membership. It effectively doubles the chance of securing a starting spot in the most sought-after New York races for those who do not have enough qualifying races or a guaranteed time. This is particularly relevant in the context of the New York City Marathon, where hundreds of thousands of runners from around the world apply every year.
