This year, the number of applications reached a record-breaking level – over 200,000 people from around the world tried their luck to secure a spot in this legendary race. That’s a 22% increase compared to 2024, highlighting the growing popularity of long-distance running and the prestige of this event.

How does the lottery work?

The lottery process, organized by New York Road Runners (NYRR), is divided into three categories: residents of the New York metropolitan area (within 60 miles of the city), other U.S. applicants, and international participants. Each group has an equal chance of being selected. Lucky runners learn about their success through credit card charges, email notifications, or updates to their NYRR account status.

This year’s lottery was one of the most competitive in history. Only 2-3% of applicants secured a spot, making the process more selective than admissions to prestigious universities.

What’s next for those not selected?

For those who didn’t get in through the lottery, there are other options. You can secure a spot through charity programs, tours operators, or participating in NYRR’s “9+1” program (completing nine races and volunteering at one event).
