Sydney Marathon 2025 – Start Area Guide
Sydney Marathon is a new member of the Abbott World Marathon Majors, which in 2025 attracted about 35,000 runners from around the world. This major sporting event offers participants a unique course with views of the Sydney Harbour Bridge and a finish at the Sydney Opera House. The running festival will include four races: the full marathon of 42.195 km, a 10 km run, a Mini Marathon of 5 km, and a wheelchair race.
How does the wave start system work?
The marathon starts in three waves that depart one after another with a short time gap, enabling smooth and comfortable organization for all runners.
• Elite runners (men and women) start promptly at 6:30 AM local AEST.
• The first wave (Start Group 1) departs at 6:31 AM,
• The second wave (Start Group 2) at 7:03 AM,
• The third wave (Start Group 3) at 7:41 AM.
The start uses a rolling start, meaning the actual crossing of the start line may occur within 10 to 30 minutes after the posted time, helping to avoid congestion and ensuring comfort.
Wheelchair race
The wheelchair race begins 15 minutes before the main marathon, at 6:15 AM. This year features the strongest field of wheelchair athletes in the history of Australian marathons.
Division into assembly zones
Each wave is divided into three color-coded assembly zones: red, green, and orange. These zones are located at St Leonards Park in North Sydney. Each zone has designated arrival and entry times for the start chute, which facilitates safe and efficient movement of runners to the start line.
Arrival and entry schedule for start zones
Example times for Start Group 1:
• Red zone – arrival at 5:00 AM, start chute entry at 5:45 AM, race start from 6:31 AM.
• Green zone – arrival at 5:00 AM, entry at 5:50 AM, start from 6:31 AM.
• Orange zone – arrival at 5:00 AM, entry at 6:05 AM, start from 6:31 AM.
Similar schedules apply for groups 2 and 3, adjusted according to their start times.
The detailed start schedule with assignments to zones and groups can be found in the separate text “Sydney Marathon 2025 – Start Schedule”.
