Sebastian Sawe Wins the London Marathon 2026 in 1:59:30
The London Marathon, held on 26 April 2026, will be remembered as a historic breakthrough in long-distance running. Sebastian Sawe achieved what once seemed impossible — he became the first athlete in history to break the two-hour barrier in an official marathon, winning in 1:59:30. The London course, known for its fast sections and stable conditions, became the stage for one of the most significant moments in the sport’s history.
Men’s Elite: Sebastian Sawe’s Historic World Record
From the opening kilometers, the pace was exceptionally fast. Three pacemakers led the group at sub-two-hour tempo, with the main contenders — Sebastian Sawe, Yomif Kejelcha, Jacob Kiplimo, Amos Kipruto, Deresa Geleta, and Tamirat Tola — running in the front pack. By the 5 km mark (14:14), it was clear that the race was developing into something historic.
The leaders reached the halfway point in 1:00:29, maintaining a pace faster than Kelvin Kiptum’s world-record schedule from Chicago. After 30 km, Sawe and Kejelcha remained at the front, battling for both the victory and the world record. In the final stretch, Sawe proved stronger and crossed the line in 1:59:30.
Yomif Kejelcha finished second in 1:59:41, while Jacob Kiplimo took third with 2:00:28. All three athletes ran faster than Kelvin Kiptum’s previous world record of 2:00:35.
