Cape Town Marathon Joins the Abbott World Marathon Majors
On 10 June 2026, it was officially confirmed that the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon has become the eighth race in the Abbott World Marathon Majors series and the first Major ever held on African soil. The announcement followed the successful staging of the 24 May 2026 edition, which served as the second and final stage of the AbbottWMM evaluation process.
By joining the series, the Cape Town Marathon now stands alongside the world’s most prestigious races: Tokyo, Boston, London, Sydney, Berlin, Chicago and New York. Its first edition as an official Major will take place on 23 May 2027. The historic significance lies in the fact that Cape Town becomes the first African representative in this elite global lineup.
AbbottWMM CEO Dawna Stone highlighted that the decision reflects years of growth, organisational development and the commitment of the team led by Clark Gardner. She emphasised the unique atmosphere of the city, the support of its residents and the remarkable setting, all of which she believes will add a new dimension to the series.
