Boston Marathon: Deposit and Transportation

On the day of the marathon, participants have the option to use the baggage deposit located at the intersection of Boylston Street and Berkeley Street, right next to the finish line. This location is crucial for runners who want to leave their belongings in a safe place before starting the race. The baggage deposit operates from 5:45 AM to 9:15 AM, allowing convenient drop-off before heading to Hopkinton. After completing the race, participants can retrieve their belongings at the same location, with pick-up available between 11:30 AM and 6:00 PM. To use this service, each participant must attach a special sticker to their bag before handing it over to race staff.

During bib number pick-up, all runners receive a special one-gallon bag. This is the only bag allowed on the bus transporting participants to Hopkinton. It is important to note that any clothing left behind in Hopkinton will not be returned — it will be donated by the Boston Athletic Association (B.A.A.) to local charitable organizations.

Buses transporting participants to Hopkinton depart from Boston Common, specifically from Charles Street. The bus departure schedule is aligned with the assigned starting waves and bib numbers of the participants. For example, runners in Wave 1 (bib numbers from 201 to 8,499) should arrive for loading at 6:45 AM. Subsequent waves have scheduled loading times as follows: 7:30 AM (Wave 2), 8:15 AM (Wave 3), and 9:00 AM (Wave 4). Organizers recommend punctuality to avoid delays.

Upon arrival in Hopkinton, participants will be directed to the Athletes’ Village, located at Hopkinton Middle/High School. This area is designed as a rest and warm-up zone before the start of the race. To enter the Athletes’ Village, each runner must present their bib number. The village provides space for relaxation and physical and mental preparation for the run.

From the Athletes’ Village, runners must walk to the starting area according to their assigned wave and bib number. Each bib displays a square indicating the designated starting position. After leaving the village, participants are arranged in order within starting zones (known as “corrals”), ensuring a smooth start process. The route leads to the starting line, approximately 0.7 miles from the village, requiring a short walk.

Each runner’s bib number is assigned based on their qualifying time, allowing them to start in a group with participants of similar skill levels. It is possible to change your starting zone by moving to a later wave or slower corral, but you cannot move to an earlier wave or faster group.

The marathon starts in waves at the following times:
• Wave 1: 10:00 AM
• Wave 2: 10:25 AM
• Wave 3: 10:50 AM
• Wave 4: 11:15 AM

Boston Marathon Tips!
🔹 Bus Loading Schedule: The bus loading process is the same as last year! Be sure to arrive at Boston Common on time. Don’t risk being late!
🔹 Gear Check: Drop off your gear bag on Boylston Street (west of Arlington Street) before boarding the bus. Remember, anything you bring to Hopkinton must be consumed, left there or carried back to Boston.
🔹 Timing is Key: Arrive at Arlington Station 20–30 minutes early to avoid delays. After dropping off your bag, allow 15–20 minutes to walk to the bus loading area.
🔹Plan Ahead: Use the port-o-potties at Boston Common before boarding—buses are bumpy and take about an hour to reach Hopkinton.
🔹 Post-Race Reminder: After crossing the finish line, don’t forget to pick up your gear bag about 10 minutes from the finish area.
