Berlin Marathon 2025: Start Area Guide

The BMW Berlin Marathon is an event that brings together thousands of runners every year. The 2025 edition will take place on Sunday, September 21. To make race day smooth and stress-free, it’s worth familiarizing yourself in advance with the entry procedures, group assignments, and layout of the start area. This guide will help you stay focused and well-prepared.

Where is the start located?

The marathon will begin on Straße des 17. Juni, between the Brandenburg Gate and the “Kleiner Stern” roundabout. This location is familiar to past participants and offers easy access and ample space for runners.

Entering the event site

Access to the start area is restricted to registered participants with an official bib number and a wristband, which you’ll receive when picking up your race kit at the EXPO. The only entrance for runners is via “Platz der Republik.”

To avoid congestion, entry times are staggered by group:

• 7:00 AM – Groups A, B, C, D
• 7:30 AM – Groups E, F
• 8:00 AM – Groups G, H, J
• 8:30 AM – Group K

Arriving a bit early is recommended so you can reach your designated zone calmly and without rush.

Starting groups and waves

Runners will begin in four waves:

• 9:15 AM – Groups ABCD
• 9:45 AM – Groups EF
• 10:10 AM – Groups GH
• 10:40 AM – Groups JK

Your group assignment depends on your best or expected finish time. You can update your time in your user account until August 28, 2025, provided you have proof of a finish time under 3:15 hours.

Navigating the start area

Once inside the event site, follow the marked paths to reach your starting zone. Updated maps will be available from August, but it’s a good idea to review the general layout ahead of time to avoid confusion on race day.

What’s prohibited?

For safety reasons, certain items are not allowed in the start and finish areas. These include:

• Weapons or dangerous objects
• Glass containers
• Large items (chairs, ladders)
• Fireworks, flares, megaphones
• Bicycles, animals, luggage

Security checks will be conducted at the entrance, so make sure to comply with these rules.

Clothing, ponchos, and donations

If you selected the “clothing drop-off” option during registration, you’ll receive a bag and label for your gear. Other participants will be given a warm poncho at the finish line. You can also donate clothing on-site—containers will be available in the start area for items like hoodies or jackets.

Tracking and timekeeping

Your race time will be recorded using the MIKA TAG, a disposable transponder attached to the back of your bib. You can choose your tracking settings in your account: private, public, or code-based access.

Summary

The BMW Berlin Marathon 2025 start area is designed to ensure a smooth and safe experience for all runners. With clear entry procedures and group divisions, you can begin your race day with confidence. Arrive on time, follow the guidelines, and focus on your run—it’s the best way to start strong.
