Amos Kipruto Wins the 2026 Chicago Marathon
Amos Kipruto emerged as the standout performer of the 2026 Chicago Marathon, winning the men’s race in 2:01:09 and lowering his personal best by 30 seconds. His time ranks as the second-fastest ever recorded in Chicago and fifth on the world all‑time list, matching Eliud Kipchoge’s best record‑eligible performance. The race opened at an exceptionally aggressive pace — the lead group of six reached halfway in 1:00:21, faster than the split Sebastian Sawe produced during his 1:59:30 run in London earlier this year.
The decisive moment came between 28 and 29 kilometers, when Jacob Kiplimo launched a sharp surge. His move split the lead pack, and the only athlete able to respond was Kipruto. The segment from 25 to 30 kilometers was covered in 13:58, projecting a finish close to 2:00:12. The two leaders stayed together until the 20‑mile mark (1:31:51), but Kipruto gradually began to pull away. With seven kilometers remaining, he had a clear advantage, and each subsequent mile widened the gap. Kiplimo faded visibly and was overtaken by Tadese Bikila and Milkesa Mengesha.
Kipruto held his lead to the finish, stopping the clock at 2:01:09. Bikila secured second place with a personal best of 2:02:56, while Mengesha finished third in 2:03:46. Kiplimo crossed the line fourth in 2:04:18. The top American was Clayton Young, who placed seventh in a lifetime best of 2:05:23, moving to No. 2 on the U.S. all‑time list. Charles Hicks followed in eighth with 2:05:35, becoming the third-fastest American in history. His compatriot Vincent Mauri, despite muscle issues late in the race, finished tenth in 2:06:45. Galen Rupp placed eleventh in 2:06:54, setting a new U.S. masters record.
