Review of New Balance Fuelcell SuperComp Trainer V1
Basic parameters:
• Weight: 341 g
• Drop: 8 mm
• Type: training-racing
Upper and comfort
The SuperComp Trainer V1 features a breathable, flexible knit upper that fits the foot very well. The material is soft and does not cause chafing, even during long runs. The heel counter is flexible and well-shaped, minimizing the risk of Achilles irritation. The laces are elastic and do not press on the top of the foot. The forefoot is slightly wider, which will be appreciated by those with higher insteps or wider feet.
Cushioning and dynamics
The model’s biggest advantage is its massive FuelCell foam midsole, which provides exceptionally soft and springy cushioning. Combined with the Energy Arc carbon plate, it delivers excellent propulsion and a pronounced energy return. This means the shoe protects your muscles even after very long training sessions – your legs will feel fresher the next day compared to running in traditional non-carbon shoes.
Importantly, the SuperComp Trainer V1’s dynamics show best at faster paces. For slow recovery runs, the shoe may feel too soft and slightly “dampening,” which may not encourage you to pick up the pace. However, at threshold, interval, or marathon-pace long runs, it reveals its full potential.
Stability and grip
Despite its very high stack, the shoe remains surprisingly stable on asphalt, although on uneven surfaces (like trails or parks) it’s easier to lose balance. The outsole is covered with carbon rubber, providing good grip on both wet and dry surfaces. Unfortunately, the soft rubber wears out rather quickly, which may shorten the shoe’s lifespan if used intensively.
Durability and drawbacks
• Weight: At 341 g, it’s heavy for a carbon-plated shoe – while the weight isn’t very noticeable at speed, it’s not a model for those seeking ultralight racers.
• Sole durability: The soft rubber outsole wears faster than in classic trainers.
• Very high stack: Requires some getting used to, especially at first.
• Price: Similar to carbon racers, which may be a drawback considering it’s not race-legal for official competitions due to stack height.
Summary
The New Balance Fuelcell SuperComp Trainer V1 is an excellent choice for advanced runners seeking maximum muscle protection during long, demanding road workouts. Cushioning and energy return are top-notch, and comfort lets you handle even very high weekly mileage. The shoe’s weight and stack height mean it’s not for everyone – beginners may feel unstable, and those seeking versatility for different surfaces should look elsewhere. It’s a perfect “trainer” before racing in lighter carbon shoes – after training in the SuperComp Trainer, you’ll feel real “lightness” in your racing flats.
