1. General Lottery
Starting in 2024, all interested participants can enter the general lottery for a chance to secure a spot in the marathon. The lottery is open to everyone, regardless of running experience.
2. Time Qualification
Runners can qualify for the marathon by achieving specific times in previous races. Qualification standards vary by age and gender:
- Men under 40 years: below 2:35
- Women under 40 years: below 2:55
- Non-binary under 40 years: below 2:55
- Men over 40 years: below 2:50
- Women over 40 years: below 3:10
- Non-binary over 40 years: below 3:10
3. Charity Program
Participants can secure their spot by raising funds for a chosen charity organization. Minimum donation amounts vary depending on the organization, which may be based in Australia, the UK, or the USA.
4. Travel Packages
Comprehensive packages offered by travel agencies include not only entry to the marathon but also accommodation and additional services.
5. Abbott Lottery
Runners who have completed at least four marathons from the Abbott World Marathon Majors (WMM) series are eligible for a dedicated Abbott lottery. Members of the Abbott WMM Gold Club have an additional opportunity to participate in the lottery without limits on earned stars.
6. Candidacy Club
A new and exclusive option in Sydney is the Candidacy Club, created to support Sydney’s journey toward becoming an Abbott World Marathon Major. Members of this club enjoy numerous benefits:
• Guaranteed entry into the marathon for three years after Sydney is officially accepted into the Abbott World Marathon Majors.
• Opportunities to secure guaranteed spots in selected Abbott WMM marathons.
• Exclusive access to reward programs and other perks, such as a commemorative shirt and medal for completing the Sydney Marathon.
Note: Membership in the Candidacy Club was available prior to Sydney’s official acceptance into the WMM series.
