The London Marathon is not only one of the largest road races in the world, but also a unique logistical experience – especially on race day. Before you cross the start line, there are still a few important steps to take in what’s known as the Start Area – the pre-race preparation zone.
If you’re taking part in the TCS London Marathon 2025, this guide will help you navigate the five Assembly Areas, understand where to go, what to bring, and how to stay calm in a crowd of thousands of runners.
How Assembly Areas Work
There are five Assembly Areas this year. Your bib number determines your assigned area:
| Bib number | Assembly Area | Nearest station |
|---|---|---|
| Blue numbers on a white background | BLUE | Blackheath – 10 min walk |
| Green numbers on a white background | GREEN | Blackheath – 10 min walk |
| Pink numbers on a white background | PINK | Maze Hill – 10 min walk |
| Red numbers on a white background | RED | Greenwich – 10 min walk |
| Red numbers on a yellow background | YELLOW | Blackheath – 10 min walk |
Your bib number determines which Assembly Area you should go to. This is very important, as it’s the only place where you can drop off your kitbag and head to the start line.
Transport and Arrival
Free travel is offered to all runners on race day:
- Southeastern trains from London terminals
- DLR
- Underground and buses
Important: Just show your bib – don’t tap your card or Oyster at any gate!
Recommended travel planning:
Use tfl.gov.uk/plan-a-journey and nationalrail.co.uk to check routes and updates.
Travel Tips:
- For the Red zone, the best access is from Greenwich Station.
- For the Pink zone – from Maze Hill.
- For Blue, Green, and Yellow – from Blackheath Station.
Pre-Race Preparation
Once you arrive in your Assembly Area:
- Find the baggage truck with your bib number and drop off your kitbag there.
- Make sure you have:
- Post-race food,
- A securely tied bag,
- Unnecessary items removed (don’t bring your phone unless absolutely necessary).
- Use the toilets – accessible units and Peequals (female urinals) are available.
- Start waves begin at 9:35 AM and close at 11:30 AM. You won’t be allowed to start after that time – so don’t be late.
Practical Tips
•Don’t bring friends/family to the Start – it’s runners-only.
•Use the water refill stations at miles 7.5, 15, and 20.
•Donate unwanted clothes at designated bins.
•Find help at the Information Point in each Assembly Area.
•Spot pacers near the Start Line – look for bright flags with finish times.
