Boston Marathon 2027: Cut-Off Was 5 Minutes and 17 Seconds

The cut-off for the 131st Boston Marathon was 5 minutes and 17 seconds faster than the official qualifying standard. Only athletes who exceeded their age‑group qualifying time by at least 5:17 were included in the main acceptance group. A total of 24,630 runners met this threshold and secured entry after verification.

During the registration window, 33,649 qualifying applications were submitted. After reviewing results, 25,630 athletes have been accepted or are in the final verification stage. The gap between applications and available spots shows how competitive this year was — 8,019 qualifiers did not meet the cut-off.

A new element for 2027 is the Boston Qualifier Selection — an additional pool of 1,000 randomly selected athletes who met the qualifying standard but did not exceed the 5:17 cut-off. This mechanism gives borderline qualifiers a chance to enter the race, provided their result is officially verified. Email notifications for this group are being sent over the coming days.

Among athletes who exceeded the cut-off, there are 13,898 men, 10,641 women and 91 non‑binary runners. The accepted field represents 120 countries, all 50 U.S. states, Washington, D.C., and additional U.S. territories — making this one of the most international editions in race history.

The most common qualifying races were: the 2026 Boston Marathon (4,448 results), the 2025 Chicago Marathon (2,043), the 2025 New York City Marathon (826), the 2025 California International Marathon (812) and the 2026 London Marathon (610). Major global marathons remain the primary pathway to earning a Boston Qualifier.

Around 10,745 athletes will run their first Boston Marathon. The youngest accepted runner is 18 years old, while the oldest is 84. The field also includes 1,498 Massachusetts residents. Additionally, 215 athletes qualified through the Para Athletics Division, and 849 earned entry by completing at least 10 consecutive Boston Marathons or through B.A.A. Running Club eligibility.

The statistics also include 240 qualifying times from net‑downhill courses. These results are permitted but undergo detailed review to ensure consistency across qualifying standards.
