Boston Marathon 2026 – Key Registration Information

The 130th edition of the Boston Marathon, sponsored by Bank of America, will take place on Monday, April 20, 2026. As every year, athletes must meet strict qualifying criteria and complete the registration process established by the Boston Athletic Association (B.A.A.).

All runners interested in participating in 2026 must remember that registration is not on a first-come, first-served basis. What counts is the performance and the time achieved below the official qualifying standards.

Registration Deadlines for Boston Marathon 2026

The registration process takes place exclusively via the Athletes’ Village platform. In 2025, it is scheduled for the period from September 8 to September 12, from 10:00 a.m. ET on the first day until 5:00 p.m. ET on the last day.

Key Dates:

– Qualifying window for the Boston Marathon 2026: from September 1, 2024, to September 12, 2025, at 5:00 p.m. ET.
– Start of qualifying window for the Boston Marathon 2027: September 13, 2025.
– Official notifications of acceptance or rejection of applications: early October 2025.
Runners with an active streak of completing at least 10 Boston Marathons have the right to early registration.

How the Qualification Process Works

– To apply for entry, an athlete must achieve a time that meets the B.A.A.‘s qualifying standards and submit an application within the official registration week.
– All times are verified, and acceptance is based on how much the athlete’s result is under their qualifying time.
– Registration is paid, and the entry fee is non-refundable, non-transferable, and non-deferrable.
– Participants who purchase additional RegShield insurance may be eligible for refunds in cases such as pregnancy, job loss, or injury.

Qualifying Course Elevation Changes – New Rules from Boston Marathon 2027

Starting in 2027, significant changes will take effect regarding qualifying courses with net downhill elevation. The Boston Athletic Association has decided that:

• For courses with a net elevation drop between 457 and 914 meters (1,500 to 2,999 feet), 5 minutes will be added to the finishing time.
• For courses with a net elevation drop between 914 and 1,828 meters (3,000 to 5,999 feet), 10 minutes will be added.
• Results from courses with an elevation drop exceeding 1,828 meters (6,000 feet) will no longer be accepted for qualification.

This is a crucial change, as many fast marathons worldwide have until now been relied upon for their time advantage due to downhill elevation. From now on, runners need to carefully choose their qualifying marathon and verify its elevation profile.

Boston Climate Crew – Running with Environmental Awareness

Beyond the competitive aspect, the B.A.A. also focuses on ecology. The special Boston Climate Crew initiative engages runners who want to support sustainable development and reduce the carbon footprint of the event alongside their marathon participation. Participants commit to raising a minimum of $1,500 and in return receive additional benefits such as a special welcome package, dedicated transportation, and the opportunity to join a pre-race warm-up run led by Boston Marathon legends.

How to Increase Your Chances of Starting?

Although achieving the qualifying standard is a major challenge, it does not always guarantee entry. The decisive factor is how many minutes you beat the qualifying time by.

Therefore:

• Plan your qualifying marathon well in advance.
• Choose a certified course (preferably flat and certified by World Athletics or USATF).
• Aim for a result several minutes better than the minimum standard.
• Consider running a spring marathon to leave time for a possible second attempt to improve your time.

Summary

The Boston Marathon 2026 is a unique running event combining sporting history, legend, and an unmatched atmosphere. To participate, you must not only achieve the required time but also prepare ahead for registration and know the latest rules.
