Alphonce Felix Simbu World Marathon Champion in Tokyo 2025

On September 15, 2025, Tokyo witnessed one of the most extraordinary races in marathon history. Alphonce Felix Simbu of Tanzania made history by becoming the first athlete from his country to win a world championship title in the marathon.

Historic photo finish

The men’s marathon at the World Championships in Tokyo ended in a way that will go down in athletics history. Simbu and Germany’s Amanol Petros entered the stadium practically shoulder to shoulder. The final 200 meters determined the outcome, with Petros attempting a decisive move. Simbu not only held on but surprised with a last burst of speed, crossing the finish line just 0.03 seconds ahead of his rival.

Both athletes were credited with the same finishing time of 2:09:48, but Simbu’s victory was confirmed by the photo finish – the smallest winning margin ever in a World Championships marathon.

“A dream come true” – Simbu’s reaction

The champion could not hide his emotions after this historic success: Today is a day of celebration for Tanzania. We have written a new chapter as a country. This was my dream and I am happy. In sport, it’s about discipline, training, and never giving up. After winning bronze in 2017, for years I tried to get back on the podium. Sometimes I failed, but I never gave up. Today I feel at peace, because I know that perseverance has paid off, said Simbu shortly after the race.

Podium and medalists in Tokyo

The final podium was as follows:
• Gold – Alphonce Felix Simbu (Tanzania, 2:09:48)
• Silver – Amanol Petros (Germany, 2:09:48, 0.03 behind)
• Bronze – Iliass Aouani (Italy, 2:09:53)

Third-place finisher Iliass Aouani emphasized the value of his achievement, saying: Behind this medal are countless difficult moments, disappointments, and failures. This is a tough sport, and not many people understand how demanding it is. That’s why I am proud of this bronze.

Battle on the Course and Changing Leaders

From the very first kilometers, the rivals ran at a fast yet steady pace. Initially, the lead was taken by Kenya’s Vincent Ngetich, followed briefly by athletes such as Germany’s Richard Ringer, defending champion Victor Kiplangat of Uganda, and Ethiopia’s Tadese Takele, the winner of this year’s Tokyo Marathon.

The high humidity and hot temperatures made the race not only a test of endurance but also one of mental toughness. Athletes frequently used cooling stations with ice and sponges. There were also striking moments of solidarity, when competitors passed water and sponges to one another, focusing above all on surviving the harsh conditions.

Decisive Stage of the Race

In the closing kilometers, a leading trio emerged: Simbu, Petros, and Aouani. The atmosphere began to resemble a middle-distance race more than a marathon. Ultimately, the dramatic finish came inside the stadium, where Simbu and Petros gave their all, sprinting like 100m specialists.

The Importance of Victory for Tanzania

Simbu’s triumph carries enormous significance for his country. For the first time, Tanzania can proudly celebrate a world champion in the marathon, joining the ranks of African running powerhouses such as Kenya and Ethiopia. His story demonstrates that patience and consistent work can lead to fulfilling even the greatest sporting dreams. This historic gold will undoubtedly inspire a new generation of talented Tanzanian runners.

Tokyo – The City of Great Marathons

The Japanese capital once again confirmed its reputation as a host of spectacular sporting events. The marathon course, the cheering crowds, and the unique atmosphere ensured this race will be remembered in athletics history, standing alongside the most iconic Olympic finals.
