Tokyo Marathon 2026 – Can You Defer Your Entry to the Following Year?
Many runners dream of participating in the Tokyo Marathon, but life can be unpredictable, and sometimes situations arise that prevent you from running on the planned date. Naturally, the question comes up: can you transfer your bib to the next year?
Official Rules on Deferring Entries
The official Tokyo Marathon rules are quite strict. Normally, there is no option to defer your entry to the next edition if you cannot participate due to personal reasons such as injury, illness, travel issues, or other circumstances. The regulations clearly state that not showing up for reasons on your side does not result in a refund or the possibility of deferral. Each race entry is tied to a specific person and race date.
Exception for Pregnant Women
The only exception to this rule applies in the case of pregnancy or childbirth. In such situations, a participant may transfer her entry to one of the following three editions of the Tokyo Marathon (for example, 2027, 2028, or 2029). A valid medical certificate confirming pregnancy or childbirth must be submitted. It’s important to note that even in this case, the entry fee is not refunded – to participate in the next year, the runner will need to pay the entry fee again.
No Transfer of Bibs to Another Runner
Additionally, the organizers do not allow entries to be transferred to another runner. Each bib number is strictly assigned to the person who purchased it, which prevents misuse and ensures the integrity of the start list.
What Do These Rules Mean in Practice?
In practice, this means that if you have secured an entry but cannot participate for any reason (other than the special case of pregnancy), your spot is forfeited. There is no automatic deferral or refund of the entry fee. That’s why it’s important to carefully consider your plans and circumstances before registering.
Summary
The Tokyo Marathon is one of the most prestigious marathons in the world, but its rules about deferring participation are strict. If you cannot run, unfortunately, you cannot move your entry to the next year, unless you qualify under the pregnancy and childbirth exception. In that case, you must complete the required formalities and contact the organizers in advance. Knowing these rules helps you avoid disappointment and better plan your Tokyo Marathon journey, both for yourself and your running community.
