Abbott Chicago 5K 2025 – Shakeout Run in Downtown Chicago

The Abbott Chicago 5K, held on October 11, 2025—the day before the big marathon—is an event that draws crowds of runners to the streets of downtown Chicago every year. This 5-kilometer race is not only a chance for a short warm-up before the marathon but also an opportunity to explore the city and soak in the unique marathon atmosphere.

Abbott Chicago 5K 2025 Route – What You Should Know

The course runs through central Chicago streets, letting runners see the city’s key landmarks and feel the true pulse of the metropolis. The start is located near Grant Park, and the finish line is on Wacker Dr, right by the iconic Chicago River. The total distance is a certified 5 kilometers (3.1 miles). Along the way, participants pass Michigan Ave, Wabash Ave, State St, Clark St, and Lake St, finishing on Wacker Dr.

The race features scenic spots and immerses runners in the urban landscape, closely tied to marathon emotions. Each mile is clearly marked, and there is one water station, medical support, and restrooms located around the halfway point.

Schedule and Bib Pickup

Registration for the Abbott Chicago 5K 2025 was extremely popular—spots filled up quickly, highlighting the uniqueness of this event. Bib pickup takes place at the EXPO held at McCormick Place Convention Center (2301 S. Martin Luther King Dr.), open Thursday, October 9 from 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM and Friday, October 10 from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Visiting the EXPO is not only a requirement but also a great opportunity to explore the latest running technologies and meet fellow enthusiasts. You can buy nutrition products, check out new shoe releases, or attend interesting presentations.

Race Essentials – Bib Number and Start Corral

Each participant is assigned an individual bib number and a corral based on their declared running pace. The bib must be securely pinned to the front of the shirt with four safety pins and remain visible throughout the race. It must not be folded, altered, or transferred to another person—this results in automatic disqualification.

If you want to start with someone from a slower group, you may move back to a later corral. Before the race, it’s recommended to write emergency contact information and medical details on the back of your bib.

Course Logistics – Gear Check, Support, and Time Limit

There is no gear check or storage available at the Abbott Chicago 5K. Make sure to secure your clothing and accessories before the race. Items left near the start/finish area will be removed by staff and will not be returned.

To be classified as an official finisher of the Abbott Chicago 5K, you must complete the race within 45 minutes (15 min/mile pace, approx. 9:20 min/km). Timing mats are placed at the start and finish, and electronic clocks and clear mile markers help with time control. Your official time starts when you cross the start mat.

Chicago 5K – A Festival of Running Energy

The Abbott Chicago 5K is an unforgettable experience before a marathon debut or another 42K attempt. For many runners, the 5K is the perfect shakeout run—it helps loosen muscles, reduce stress, and feel the support of thousands of runners and spectators. At the finish line, you’ll receive a commemorative medal and enjoy the unforgettable atmosphere of a global running celebration in the heart of Chicago.
