Women’s Elite Race
Among the women, Tigst Assefa of Ethiopia was in a class of her own. Her time of 2:15:50 set a new women-only world marathon record, meaning the fastest time ever run in a marathon held without male pacemakers. Assefa dominated her rivals, and her achievement is already being recognized as one of the most significant moments in women’s marathon history. Second place went to Joyciline Jepkosgei of Kenya (2:18:44), while Sifan Hassan of the Netherlands finished third in 2:19:00
