Compared with the Boston 11, which I tested earlier, the most noticeable improvements appear in the upper and the initial softness in the forefoot. It remains a shoe for runners who prefer a firmer, more dynamic ride, but this time with a stronger focus on comfort and fit.

Boston 11 vs Boston 13 – how big is the difference?

If you want to see what the Boston 13 evolved from, check out my earlier review of the adidas Adizero Boston 11. I described issues such as the stiff heel counter and the upper prone to tearing – problems that the new version clearly addresses.

Review of adidas Adizero Boston 11 on worldmarathoner.com

Key Specifications – adidas Adizero Boston 13

Weight: 260 g

Drop: 6 mm

Type: fast‑training / training‑racing hybrid

Upper & Comfort – finally a step in the right direction

The biggest improvement over the Boston 13 is the upper. In the previous model, the stiff construction, hard heel counter and tendency to tear could easily ruin the running experience. In the Boston 13, the heel counter is finished with classic foam – enough to secure the heel, but not so much that the shoe becomes a soft daily trainer. This keeps the fast‑training character intact while eliminating the Achilles rubbing issues.

The upper material is more elastic than in the Boston 11 and wraps the foot more naturally. From the moment you put it on, the shoe adapts instead of locking the foot inside a rigid shell. In my opinion, the updated upper is the biggest advantage of the Boston 13 – lightweight, breathable and pleasant on the foot, the complete opposite of the harsh, stiff “eleven”.

Cushioning & Ride – soft at first, powerful when you speed up

The first kilometres in the Boston 13 reveal noticeably more softness in the forefoot compared with the Boston 11. During easy runs around 5:00 min/km, the shoe provides a pleasant, slightly springy landing without the “concrete” feel underfoot. Over time, this initial softness settles, and the shoe begins to resemble its predecessor – but in a more refined, less harsh form.

The true potential of the Boston 13 appears at faster paces. During a 20 km training run in the rain, including 5 × 1 km at around 3:40/km, the shoe proved it was built for speed. In the 3:35–3:45 min/km range, the energy return becomes very noticeable – the foot doesn’t sink into the foam, and the stiffness of the construction provides a stable, confident toe‑off. This is not a soft daily trainer – it’s a shoe that encourages acceleration.

Grip & Wet‑Surface Performance

I tested the Boston 13 not only in perfect weather but also during a long run in the rain. The grip on wet asphalt is excellent – the shoe holds firmly without slipping during push‑off or on corners. This allows you to focus on pace instead of worrying about each step.

Who is the adidas Adizero Boston 13 for?

The new Boston 13 is an excellent choice for lighter runners looking for a fast shoe for training and racing, combining strong energy return with solid stability.
