It was his second consecutive victory in Boston, and the way he controlled the second half of the race confirmed his absolute dominance on this demanding course.

In the early stages, the pace was driven mainly by athletes from Europe and the United States. Hendrik Pfeiffer and Alex Maier were visible at the front, and the elite men reached the halfway point in approximately 1:01:50. Clayton Young was also running strongly, even greeting spectators along the edge of the course around the 20 km mark.

After leaving Newton, the dynamics shifted completely. Ethiopian runner Miklesa Mengesa launched a strong move, but his attack was quickly neutralized. Korir took the lead and from that moment dictated a pace no one could match. His second half was faster than the first, and the segment between 30 km and 40 km—covered in 14:10—showed his exceptional form. The final 5 km in 14:00 sealed the performance. His 2:01:52 shattered the previous course record from 2011.

Race Breakdown

Korir maintained an exceptionally steady rhythm, and his acceleration after the 25 km mark became the decisive moment of the race. After crossing halfway in 1:01:50, he gradually pulled away from the field, delivering one of the strongest solo performances ever seen in Boston. Although the course is not eligible for World Athletics world records, Korir’s pace was comparable to the fastest marathons globally.

Key Split Times:

• 5 km: 14:20
• 10 km: 29:04
• Half marathon: 1:01:50
• 30 km: 1:27:38
• 40 km: 1:55:48
• Finish: 2:01:52

John Korir’s Splits – Boston Marathon 2026

Checkpoint

Time

Pace (min/km)

5K

00:14:20

2:52

10K

00:29:04

2:54

15K

00:43:48

2:55

20K

00:58:47

2:56

HALF

01:01:50

2:56

25K

01:13:05

2:55

30K

01:27:38

2:55

35K

01:41:48

2:56

40K

01:55:48

3:00

Finish

02:01:52

3:15

Top Finishers

World Champion Felix Simbu finished second in 2:02:47, while Benson Kipruto took third in 2:02:50.
