Cape Town Marathon 2025 Cancelled \u2013 Check the Official Reasons Behind the Decision!<\/strong><\/h2>\n

On Sunday morning, I received news of the cancellation of the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon 2025. Organizers made this difficult decision at 4:45 AM, and the official announcement was released at 5:00 AM\u2014just one hour and fifteen minutes before the planned start at 6:15. Around 24,000 participants were expected to take part. Due to the early hour, many received the news while already on site or en route to the start zones.<\/p>\n

Safety as the Highest Priority<\/strong><\/h4>\n

The sole reason for the cancellation was extreme weather conditions. Strong winds persisted throughout the night and into the early morning, creating a real threat to the safety of runners, volunteers, and spectators. Clark Gardner, CEO of the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon, explained the reasons behind the decision in an official statement: “Sanlam Cape Town Marathon is devastated by the cancellation of our very special event. We spent months planning for all scenarios and conditions, but ultimately, a higher force spoke. We want to thank our participants, sponsors, and stakeholders for their unwavering support and understanding.”<\/i><\/p>\n

Damaged Infrastructure and JOC\u2019s Position<\/strong><\/h4>\n

The overnight storm caused significant damage to the start and finish zones in Green Point. The wind destroyed tents and tore branding elements from fences and scaffolding. These damages forced organizers to convene an emergency meeting of the Joint Operations Committee (JOC). The committee includes representatives from the City of Cape Town responsible for disaster risk management and safety, medical services, and the South African Police Service (SAPS). This body made the final unanimous decision.<\/p>\n

Colonel Christo Engelbrecht of SAPS, speaking on behalf of the committee, delivered a clear message: “The route is unsafe due to ongoing gusts in Woodstock, and the infrastructure at the start and finish has been compromised. This poses a danger to runners and pedestrians throughout the area, and therefore the race had to be cancelled. It was a collective decision made by the entire team within the Joint Operations Committee.”<\/i><\/p>\n

City Authorities\u2019 Response<\/strong><\/h4>\n

The decision was fully supported by Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis, who emphasized that safety comes first. In his statement, he said: “All runners must be disappointed, as are we all. However, I am grateful to the event organizers for making a safety-first decision after strong winds damaged part of the race infrastructure this morning. The city is committed to hosting events of the highest global standards, and that sometimes means managing difficult decisions like this one.”<\/i> The cancellation notice was distributed via WhatsApp messages, social media, and local radio stations.<\/p>\n
