The Boston Athletic Association has decided that:

• For courses with a net elevation drop between 457 and 914 meters (1,500 to 2,999 feet), 5 minutes will be added to the finishing time.
• For courses with a net elevation drop between 914 and 1,828 meters (3,000 to 5,999 feet), 10 minutes will be added.
• Results from courses with an elevation drop exceeding 1,828 meters (6,000 feet) will no longer be accepted for qualification.

This is a crucial change, as many fast marathons worldwide have until now been relied upon for their time advantage due to downhill elevation. From now on, runners need to carefully choose their qualifying marathon and verify its elevation profile.

For more detailed information on the new rules, please read the dedicated article.

Boston Climate Crew – Running with Environmental Awareness

Beyond the competitive aspect, the B.A.A. also focuses on ecology. The special Boston Climate Crew initiative engages runners who want to support sustainable development and reduce the carbon footprint of the event alongside their marathon participation. Participants commit to raising a minimum of $1,500 and in return receive additional benefits such as a special welcome package, dedicated transportation, and the opportunity to join a pre-race warm-up run led by Boston Marathon legends.

How to Increase Your Chances of Starting?

Although achieving the qualifying standard is a major challenge, it does not always guarantee entry. The decisive factor is how many minutes you beat the qualifying time by.

Therefore:

• Plan your qualifying marathon well in advance.
• Choose a certified course (preferably flat and certified by World Athletics or USATF).
• Aim for a result several minutes better than the minimum standard.
• Consider running a spring marathon to leave time for a possible second attempt to improve your time.

Summary

The Boston Marathon 2026 is a unique running event combining sporting history, legend, and an unmatched atmosphere. To participate, you must not only achieve the required time but also prepare ahead for registration and know the latest rules.

I also recommend the entire “Boston Marathon” category on WorldMarathoner.com where you can find guides and race reports about Boston.

📸 Boston Marathon

The Boston Marathon 2026 will take place on April 20!
