In 2027, a significant change awaits, one that will directly impact the qualification process &#8211; especially for those achieving their qualifying times on courses with substantial net-downhill elevation. This is a response to analyses that have shown marathons with a net drop of more than 1,500 feet (457.2 meters) provide runners with a significant time advantage.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-228140\" src=\"https:\/\/worldmarathoner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/IMG_4727-819x1024.jpeg\" alt=\"Boston Marathon 2027\" width=\"819\" height=\"1024\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>What Are the New Rules?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Starting with qualification for the 2027 Boston Marathon, results achieved on courses with a net elevation drop greater than 1,500 feet will be subject to special time adjustments (known as an \u201cindex\u201d). This means your official time will be \u201clengthened\u201d accordingly during the verification process by the B.A.A.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Indexing Details:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Courses with a net drop of 1,500\u20132,999 feet (457.2\u2013914.1 meters): 5 minutes will be added to your official qualifying time.<br \/>\n\u2022 Courses with a net drop of 3,000\u20135,999 feet (914.2\u20131,828.5 meters): 10 minutes will be added to your qualifying time.<br \/>\n\u2022 Courses with a net drop greater than 6,000 feet (1,828.6 meters): results from such courses will not be accepted for Boston Marathon qualification.<\/p>\n<p>These rules will be in effect for at least two years, and the B.A.A. reserves the right to make further changes as needed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Examples of How the New Rules Apply:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Example 1: An 18-year-old man with a standard of 2:55:00 runs 2:45:30 on a course with a 2,000-foot net drop. After adding 5 minutes, his qualifying time is 2:50:30\u2014he qualifies.<br \/>\n\u2022 Example 2: A 40-year-old woman with a standard of 3:35:00 runs 3:20:30 on a course with a 5,000-foot net drop. After adding 10 minutes, her qualifying time is 3:30:30\u2014she qualifies.<br \/>\n\u2022 Example 3: A 35-year-old man with a standard of 3:00:00 runs 2:58:00 on a course with a 2,500-foot net drop. After adding 5 minutes, his qualifying time is 3:03:00\u2014he does not qualify.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Which Marathons Are Accepted for Qualification?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u2022 The marathon must be a full distance (42.195 km \/ 26.2 miles) with at least three official participants.<br \/>\n\u2022 The course must be certified by USATF, World Athletics, AIMS, or the relevant national governing body.<br \/>\n\u2022 Results from virtual marathons, treadmill runs, time trials, or indoor marathons are not accepted.<br \/>\n\u2022 Organizers must submit proof of certification and course elevation to the B.A.A. no later than July 1 each year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What Does This Mean for Runners?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The new rules are designed to level the playing field and ensure fair competition for all marathoners.
