Organizing a trip to Japan required some planning, but everything went smoothly, and the stay turned out to be a fascinating adventure.

Trip Costs

While preparing for the Tokyo Marathon, I carefully planned my budget. Here’s a breakdown of the expenses:

• Entry fee: $160
• Official marathon T-shirt: $45
• Travel insurance: $33
• Hotel (8 nights, for two people): $593
• Round-trip direct flight: $1,700
• Meals during the stay: $335
• Energy gels (6 pieces): $8
• EXPO (sportswear): $467
• Public transport (mainly metro): $60
• Additional expenses: $134

The total cost of the trip amounted to $3,544, which, considering the distance and the event itself, was a reasonable amount.

Food and Daily Life in Tokyo

Tokyo is an excellent destination for runners. Convenience stores like 7-Eleven are everywhere, offering a variety of food options—from traditional Japanese onigiri to more universal dishes like spaghetti. Meals can be reheated on-site or taken away, making it a convenient and budget-friendly solution.

After the marathon, I treated myself to sushi. In Japan, it’s not only fresh and expertly prepared but also cheaper than in Europe. It was a real pleasure to enjoy it in a place where its preparation is considered an art form.

Japan – A Destination Worth Considering

Japan has recently become more affordable due to the low yen exchange rate. Living costs in Japan are lower than in many European or American cities. Hotels in Tokyo are among the cheapest compared to other cities hosting World Marathon Majors (WMM). Flights remain the most significant expense, but everything else can be arranged at a reasonable price.

For more practical tips about the world’s biggest marathons, check out my ebook: [Your Guide to the World’s Biggest Marathons – World Marathon Majors 2025].

Planning to run the Tokyo Marathon?
